Doctrine of Signatures

This series combines my fascination by Science illustration - botanical and anatomical drawing together with my interest in history and role plants play in different mythologies and religious context. Of course, I took some creative liberty of picking some plants that were not on the original watchlist of the doctrine concept.

The Doctrine of signatures is reflected in the common names of some plants whose shapes and colors reminded herbalists of the parts of the body where they were thought. The concept was developed by Paracelsus, who claimed that "Nature marks each growth ... according to its curative benefit" to do good.

This concept caused a countless deaths and health issues over centuries, but still finds its followers in people prone to favor an alternative medicine.
